The Fortune Cookie Index (FCI) is a value between 0.0 (very strong economy) and 1.0 (very weak economy), representing the fraction of my last 10 fortune cookies which mention money in some way.  (# Lucky Numbers count 20%)

The current recession is now as severe as the one in the early 1990s, and either we're not out of it yet, or we're out of it so recently that we're still using up the mid-recession fortunes.  Now is not a good time to make long-term financial commitments.

When was the last time a fortune warned you of something bad? Fortune cookie companies are in the business of telling you what you want to hear, and in turbulent economic times, what you want to hear is that a stranger will hand you a diamond the size of an egg. The FCI, like "housing starts" and "first time unemployment claims" is a trailing rather than a leading economic indicator. But a lot more nutritious to collect!
